Yoga Nidra   5 comments

While I was surfing one night, I came across a website that shared the benefits of Yoga Nidra and I have been practicing it ever since.  I decided I wanted to share it with you.  It has been wonderful.

One of the things I like most about it is that you don’t have to practice it perfectly… if you fall asleep, it’s okay.

I love practices that help us to foster “us-ness” rather than perfection.  I think it helps to remind us that we are in process all the time…

When I practiced yoga nidra, I went into a state that I had not been in for a long time.  I used to relax after work, on my massage table, and would go off into this altered state.  Sometimes I would do a self-reiki session.

Other times I would just relax on the table.  But what I would do was to tell myself, I can’t fall asleep because I can’t fall off the massage table.  What ended up happening was I would not be awake, but not be asleep.  A similar state can occur during self-hypnosis as well.  It is profoundly relaxing and can bring about a state of calm alertness afterwards.

Some texts suggest 45-60 minutes of yoga nidra is the equivalent to 3-4 hours of sleep.  However, as someone who has had some sleep problems, I would encourage you continuing with good sleep hygiene.  I don’t think anything is as healing for us as good, sound sleep.

Where yoga nidra can be a benefit is when you can’t sleep, when you are in moderate pain, when it’s mid-afternoon and you need to get some clarity to continue with your present project… To me, those are safe and productive uses of yoga nidra.

Now, don’t be scared off my the picture of the corpse pose above this article… All you need to do is lay down on the floor or you bed.  Cover yourself with a light blanket and get comfortable.  If you need some bolsters or pillows to be comfortable, do whatever it takes.

I usually wrap up in my favorite blanket, lay on my back with my hands losely at my sides, and allow the blanket to drape over my head to block out any light.

I have several versions of taped yoga nidra on my ipod and my ipad.  I can listen to it with earphones if I am not alone or I can listen to it by the speakers of the ipad.

I have attached several links below this article that have transcripts for you to copy your own tape.

Yoga Nidra cds/MP3s can also be downloaded on Itunes… I did find a free one on Itunes that was created by someone at UCLA.  Check it out.  Then look for another if you want. . . there are MP3s that are recorded by both males and females, with water sounds, etc… Find one that is best for you.

Please drop us a comment and let us know if you try the practice and what it’s like for you.

In peace, Jennifer
